Chuck's Chat-Welcome to March!
Just a week ago I was complaining about being cold. Forecasts for this week call for highs approaching the upper 70’s. And that’s fine, but I’m sure tired of this temperature roller coaster we’ve been on. It takes its toll on young livestock, tender plants, and middle-aged grumpy fat guys. Oh, and we could use some rain also.
March is typically a busy month. Here are a few things happening in the area:
March 4th and 5th is the 6th Annual Inter-State Farm & Home Show held at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville. Come visit with representatives from the Anna Lawless and Brandon Dahna Farm Bureau insurance agencies, as well as all the other agricultural and residential vendors.
American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2022 Ag Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) Week was created to bring awareness to safety and health issues facing the agriculture industry. This year it will be celebrated March 7 – 11. Montgomery County Farm Bureau will highlight a variety of topics on its Facebook page.
The KFB District 3 Issue Surfacing Meeting will be March 10, at the Greenbush Education Service Center at 6:30pm. Contact Kathy O’Brien at (620) 331-0826 if you’re interested in attending.
The annual Coffee and Donuts with the legislators will be held Saturday March 12th at 9:00 a.m. at the Farm Bureau office at 217 W. Myrtle in Independence.
Daylight savings time begins March 13, which means we turn our clocks forward one hour “spring forward, fall back”. This means we will have more daylight towards the end of the day and less at the beginning. It just depends on what you prefer as to whether it’s to your liking. Personally, I like it, as I am not much of a morning person. Actually, as long as it’s warm, I don’t really care.
The Southeast District FFA discussion meet this year is on March 30 and will be held in Independence. If anyone is interested in helping judge contact me soon at (620) 330-1687.
So, we’ve got truckers driving across the country to prove a point. As long as they’re hauling something needed to a destination I really don’t care. Just don’t be wasting the over-priced diesel fuel that farmers will need as annual spring agricultural practices ramp up.
Once again, Montgomery County Farm Bureau is offering up to Five - $500 scholarships available for 2022-2023 academic school year. Information can be found at https://www.mgfarmbureau.org/scholarship
