Chuck's Chat-Welcome to March 2023!

Our favorite Tulsa TV (our assigned local stations) weatherman reported that the state of Oklahoma has had a record number of tornados this past December, January, and February. I certainly hope this is not a continuing trend as we are just now entering the severe weather season.

American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2023 Ag Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) Week was created to bring awareness to safety and health issues facing the agriculture industry. This year it will be celebrated March 6 – 10. Montgomery County Farm Bureau will highlight a variety of topics on its Facebook page.

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2am on March 12 unless you live in Arizona or Hawaii. If you’re reading this and live in Arizona or Hawaii, thank you.

The annual issue surfacing meeting will be held March 15 at The Brickhaus, 202 N Main Street in Erie beginning at 6pm. This is an opportunity for Farm Bureau members to make policy recommendations and raise issues they would like the KFB Resolutions Committee to examine. District representatives who serve on state committees will be present for a meet and greet during the initial social hour. A meal will be served at 7pm and the issue surfacing session will begin as well.

The annual Legislative Coffee will be held March 18 at 9am at the Montgomery County Farm Bureau office at 217 W Myrtle in Independence. This is an opportunity to hear from our local elected officials and ask them questions as well.

Spring begins March 20. I think we’ve already experienced some spring days intertwined with the customary winter blahs. Nonetheless, the average high and low temperatures will soon be rising daily, as well as the amount of daylight.

March 24th and 25th is the annual Inter-State Farm & Home Show held at Nellis Hall in Coffeyville. Come visit with representatives from the Anna Lawless and Brandon Dahna Farm Bureau insurance agencies, as well as all the other agricultural and residential vendors.

Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Campaign School is accepting registrations for a two-day strategy session on April 19-20 to train current and future elected office holders, such as school board, county commissioner, or state political offices. Farm Bureau members of Kansas can attend for $250 and nonmembers can join for $300. If you’d like to become a Farm Bureau member, visit www.kfb.org/join. The program is limited to 20 participants and will take place at KFB headquarters, 2627 KFB Plaza, in Manhattan. For more information about KFB’s Campaign School or to register, visit www.kfb.org/CampaignSchool.

Once again, Kansas Farm Bureau is awarding a Natural Resources Award. If you know of a Farm Bureau member in Montgomery County who deserves to be recognized for their farm conservation or land stewardship efforts, contact Kathy O’Brien at 620-331-0826.

Montgomery County Farm Bureau is offering up to Five - $500 scholarships available for 2023-2024 academic school year. Information can be found at https://www.mgfarmbureau.org/scholarship
